BILL MCMAHAN'S E-PRODUCTION 124 SPIDER

THE CAR

This is a FIAT 124 Spider used for National Championship competition in the E Production class of SCCA. The Chassis is a 1969 model. Updates allow this car to be run as a Spider 2000 model. According to the previous owner, this was never a street car. E.J.Trivette, out of Florida, originally built the car. The approach is simple and robust. NASCAR grade parts are used wherever possible. The body is Baucom/Japco fiberglass.

  • 550# NASCAR Coils, relocated lower pickups, all delrin/aluminum bushes.
  • KONI Yellows w/custom valving, 25mm adjustable bar, all rod ends.

  • Aeroquip lines throughout.
  • Goodyear or Hoosier 23"x9.5"x15" cantilever slicks on Panasport wheels.
Rear Suspension:
  • 240# KONI custom coil-overs, relocated custom Speedway trailing links. Can be set up for 4 equal length trailing arms, or tri-link configuration (with or without Panhard bar). No rear bar needed.
  • All rod ends, std. 9" brakes.

  • Carillo rods, Venolia 13.5 C.R. Pistons (Croft/Shadetree design). Guy Croft 5A/4A cams, GC triple valve springs.
  • Fully flowed head by Shadetree.
  • twin 40mm Weber IDFs w/44mm full form TWM Velocity Stacks. Custom 4 into1 pipes.
  • Electromotive direct ignition, Accusump, Aeroquip.
  • Mocal 16 row Oil Cooler.
  • Flexible power from 4500-8500 rpm.
  • Power estimated: 190 bhp @ 7500, 155 ft/lb @ 5500
  • Spares for complete second engine.
Cockpit:
  • 12" Abarth Wheel.
  • Autometer Monster Gauges.
  • Kirkey seat.
Required weight with driver: 2120 lbs.

This car is well sorted out, and the engine was built for flexibility, reliability, and power. It has all the correct bits for a very competitive National car, while at the same time being simple to set-up. Other than the engine, most parts are mainly the best available from the FIAT parts bins, or catalog house sources. The engine would not be competitive without help from (and Parts!) from Guy Croft, and Robert Rodgers of Shadetree Enginetrics. (Guy Croft is the foremost Fiat tuner in England, and Shadetree is the USA distributor for GC Engines.)
